The UMPS (uridine monophosphate synthetase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.
UMPS is a gene that encodes a protein involved in the synthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides.
UMPS is a bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the final two steps in the de novo biosynthesis of pyrimidines. It performs the conversion of orotate to orotidine-5'-monophosphate (OMP) through orotate phosphoribosyltransferase (OPRT) activity. Subsequently, it decarboxylates OMP to uridine monophosphate (UMP) through orotidine-5'-monophosphate decarboxylase (ODC) activity.
UMPS is also known as OPRT.
