Description
The AMD1 gene, also known as the mitochondrial amidoxime reductase 1 gene, plays a crucial role in the biosynthesis of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a vital component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. This chain is responsible for generating energy within cells. AMD1 catalyzes the final step in CoQ10 biosynthesis, converting 4-hydroxybenzoate to 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Mutations in the AMD1 gene can lead to a deficiency in CoQ10 production, causing various health problems.
