B3GALNT1


B3GALNT1 (beta-1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase 1) is a gene that encodes an enzyme involved in the synthesis of glycoproteins. Glycoproteins are proteins that have sugar molecules (oligosaccharides) attached to them. These oligosaccharides play important roles in a variety of cellular processes, including cell-cell adhesion, cell signaling, and immune response.

B3GALNT1 is expressed in a variety of tissues throughout the body, including the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys. Mutations in B3GALNT1 have been linked to a number of diseases, including:

  • Intellectual disability: A condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning. Intellectual disability can be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors.
  • Autism: A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that symptoms can range from mild to severe.

B3GALNT1 mutations are estimated to occur in about 1 in 50,000 people. However, the prevalence of B3GALNT1-related diseases is likely much lower, as many people with B3GALNT1 mutations do not have any symptoms.
