Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Description:

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition that causes inflammation and damage to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The two main types of IBD are:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC): Affects only the innermost lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum.
  • Crohn's disease (CD): Can affect any part of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus.

Associated Diseases:

IBD can increase the risk of developing other health conditions, including:

  • Skin disorders, such as psoriasis and erythema nodosum
  • Joint pain and inflammation (spondyloarthritis)
  • Liver disease (primary sclerosing cholangitis)
  • Eye problems, such as uveitis
