The BPI (bactericidal permeability increasing protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.
BPI may refer to:
BPI exhibits cytotoxic activity primarily against Gram-negative bacteria. This specificity arises from its strong affinity for the negatively charged lipopolysaccharides (LPS) present in the outer envelope of these bacteria. The N-terminal half of BPI, which is highly basic, binds to LPS. BPI demonstrates antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). However, this activity can be inhibited by LPS derived from P. aeruginosa.
