Campylobacter is a genus of Gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacteria that are commonly found in the intestines of animals, such as poultry, cattle, and pigs. It is a major cause of diarrheal illness in humans.

Campylobacter infection can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Diarrhea (often bloody)
- Abdominal cramps
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Most infections are self-limiting and resolve within a few days. However, in severe cases, campylobacter can lead to:
- Guillain-Barré syndrome (a neurological condition)
- Reactive arthritis
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
