CAMSAP1


Description

The CAMSAP1 (calmodulin regulated spectrin associated protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

Calmodulin-regulated spectrin-associated protein 1 (CAMSAP1) is a human protein encoded by the gene CAMSAP1. Like other CAMSAP-family proteins, it is a microtubule minus-end anchor, and binds microtubules through its CKK domain. CAMSAP1 is vital for neuron polarisation, and so mice that lack CAMSAP1 die of epileptic seizures.

CAMSAP1 is a key microtubule-organizing protein that specifically binds to the minus-end of non-centrosomal microtubules, regulating their dynamics and organization. It recognizes growing microtubule minus-ends and stabilizes microtubules, protecting them from depolymerization. CAMSAP1 acts on free microtubule minus-ends that are not capped by microtubule-nucleating proteins or other factors. Unlike CAMSAP2 and CAMSAP3, it tracks along the growing tips of minus-end microtubules without affecting the polymerization rate, acting as a minus-end tracking protein (-TIP) that dissociates after allowing tubulin incorporation. CAMSAP1's interaction with spectrin may regulate neurite outgrowth.
