LAMA2 : laminin subunit alpha 2

Description

The LAMA2 (laminin subunit alpha 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

The LAMA2 gene instructs the production of the alpha-2 subunit of laminin proteins. Laminins are crucial for cell growth, movement, and adhesion, as well as the formation of basement membranes. Specifically, laminin-2 (merosin or laminin-211) and laminin-4 (laminin-221), which both contain the alpha-2 subunit, are particularly important for skeletal muscle stability.

Laminin, a complex protein, plays a crucial role in the organization and development of tissues during embryonic development. It attaches to cells via a high-affinity receptor and interacts with other extracellular matrix components, facilitating the attachment, migration, and organization of cells.

LAMA2 is also known as LAMM, MDC1A.
