Description

The MEI1 (meiotic double-stranded break formation protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

MEI1 is a gene that provides instructions for making a protein involved in the process of meiosis, specifically in the formation of double-stranded breaks in DNA. These breaks are essential for the exchange of genetic material between chromosomes, a process known as recombination.

MEI1 is essential for proper alignment of chromosomes during meiosis, a process known as synapsis. It may also play a role in creating breaks in the DNA strands of chromosomes within spermatocytes, a critical step in generating genetic diversity.

MEI1 is also known as HYDM3, SPATA38.
