Holliday junction recognition protein is a protein in humans that is encoded by the HJURP gene.
HJURP is a centromeric protein crucial for the incorporation and maintenance of CENPA, a histone H3-like variant, at centromeres. It acts as a specific chaperone for CENPA, facilitating the integration of newly synthesized CENPA molecules into nucleosomes during centromere replication. HJURP prevents the premature formation of CENPA-H4 tetramers and their binding to DNA, ensuring proper CENPA assembly. Additionally, it directly binds Holliday junctions.
HJURP is also known as FAKTS, URLC9, hFLEG1.
