HOXB13 : homeobox B13


Description

The HOXB13 (homeobox B13) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

The HOXB13 gene provides instructions for producing a protein that binds to specific regions of DNA and controls the activity of other genes. This protein, a transcription factor, belongs to the homeobox protein family and is thought to be involved in the development and maintenance of skin. It also functions as a tumor suppressor, preventing cells from uncontrolled growth and division. The HOXB13 protein has a homeobox region (homeodomain) for DNA binding and two MEIS interacting domains that likely regulate its activity by controlling the interaction of the homeodomain with DNA.

HOXB13 is a sequence-specific transcription factor that plays a role in the development of specific regions along the body's axis. It preferentially binds to DNA that has been methylated.
