HOXC5
Description
The HOXC5 (homeobox C5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.
HOXC5 is a gene that encodes a protein known as Homeobox protein Hox-C5. This protein belongs to the homeobox gene family, which plays a vital role in morphogenesis (the development of the form of an organism) across all multicellular organisms. Humans possess four distinct homeobox gene clusters: HOXA, HOXB, HOXC, and HOXD, each located on separate chromosomes. These clusters consist of 9 to 11 genes arranged in a linear fashion. HOXC5 is one of several genes found within the HOXC cluster located on chromosome 12. Three genes within this cluster, HOXC5, HOXC4, and HOXC6, share a common 5' non-coding exon. Transcripts produced from these genes may include the shared exon spliced to gene-specific exons, or they may contain only the gene-specific exons. Two alternatively spliced variants of HOXC5 have been identified. The transcript variant that includes the shared exon does not appear to encode a protein. The protein-coding transcript variant includes only the gene-specific exons.
