Description

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common, sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects both men and women. It's caused by a group of more than 150 related viruses that can infect the skin and mucous membranes.

HPV infections can lead to a wide range of diseases, including:

  • Cervical cancer: The most serious consequence of HPV infection, cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide.
  • Genital warts: Warts caused by HPV can appear on the genitals, anus, or other areas of the body.
  • Oropharyngeal cancer: A type of cancer that develops in the throat or tonsils, caused by HPV.
  • Vulvar cancer: A type of cancer that affects the vulva (the external female genitals).
  • Penile cancer: A rare type of cancer that affects the penis.
