Description

The KRT3 (keratin 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

The KRT3 gene provides instructions for making keratin 3, a tough, fibrous protein that forms the structural framework of epithelial cells. Keratin 3 is specifically produced in the corneal epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea, which acts as a barrier against foreign materials. It forms intermediate filaments with keratin 12, providing strength and resilience to the corneal epithelium.

Keratin 3, encoded by the KRT3 gene, plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of the corneal epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea. This protein forms a strong network with keratin 12, providing resilience and resistance to the cornea against external threats like dust and bacteria.

KRT3 is also known as CK3, K3, MECD2.
