It contributes to the interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex, where it interacts with hair keratin intermediate filaments. Through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with abundant cysteine residues in hair keratins, KRTAP21-1 contributes to the rigidity and strength of the hair shaft.
