KRTAP9-1

Description

The KRTAP9-1 (keratin associated protein 9-1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

KRTAP9-1 plays a crucial role in hair structure by forming an interfilamentous matrix within the hair cortex. This matrix, composed of KRTAPs, including KRTAP9-1, is essential for creating a rigid and resilient hair shaft. KRTAP9-1, along with other KRTAPs, achieves this strength through extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with cysteine residues found in hair keratins. This process involves interactions with high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins, contributing to the overall structural integrity of hair.

KRTAP9-1 is also known as KAP9.1, KRTAP9L3.
