MDM4
Description
The MDM4 (MDM4 regulator of p53) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
MDM4 is a protein encoded by the MDM4 gene in humans. It plays a role in apoptosis and contains a RING finger domain and a putative nuclear localization signal. The MDM4 protein interacts with p53 through a binding domain in its N-terminal region. It shows significant structural similarity to MDM2. MDM4 interacts with E2F1, Mdm2, and P53.
MDM4, along with MDM2, regulates TP53 activity. It inhibits p53/TP53- and TP73/p73-mediated cell cycle arrest and apoptosis by binding to the transcriptional activation domain of p53. MDM4 also inhibits the degradation of MDM2 and can reverse MDM2-mediated degradation of TP53, while maintaining suppression of TP53 transactivation and apoptotic functions.
MDM4 is also known as BMFS6, HDMX, MDMX, MRP1.
