Description

The MED9 (mediator complex subunit 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

Mediator complex subunit 9 (Med9) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MED9 gene. The multiprotein Mediator complex is a coactivator required for activation of RNA polymerase II transcription by DNA bound transcription factors. The protein encoded by this gene is thought to be a subunit of the Mediator complex. This gene is located within the Smith–Magenis syndrome region on chromosome 17.

MED9 is a component of the Mediator complex, a vital coactivator for the regulated transcription of almost all genes that rely on RNA polymerase II. Mediator acts as a bridge, transferring information from gene-specific regulatory proteins to the core RNA polymerase II transcription machinery. Mediator is drawn to promoter regions through direct interactions with regulatory proteins, serving as a framework for the formation of a functional preinitiation complex alongside RNA polymerase II and essential transcription factors.

MED9 is also known as MED25.
