Nucleolin is a major protein found within the nucleolus of growing eukaryotic cells. It interacts with chromatin and pre-ribosomal particles, contributing to chromatin decondensation by binding to histone H1. This protein plays a critical role in pre-rRNA transcription and ribosome assembly and may be involved in transcriptional elongation. It exhibits a stronger affinity for RNA oligonucleotides with 5'-UUAGGG-3' repeats compared to telomeric single-stranded DNA 5'-TTAGGG-3' repeats.
