The OR8D2 (olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
Olfactory receptor 8D2 is a protein encoded by the OR8D2 gene in humans. It belongs to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in smell perception. These receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose, triggering a neuronal response that leads to the perception of a smell. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for recognizing and transducing odorant signals via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, with a unique nomenclature system independent of other organisms.
