Description

The PANO1 (proapoptotic nucleolar protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

PANO1 is a protein encoded by the PANO1 gene in humans. It is an apoptosis-inducing protein that regulates the function of the tumor suppressor, p14ARF. PANO1 stabilizes and protects p14ARF from degradation when highly expressed in cells. With a high degree of confidence, PANO1 is believed to be localized in the nucleolus of the cell. PANO1 is an intron-less gene, a rare type of gene constituting only about 3% of the human genome. Intron-less genes often exhibit tissue-specific expression, particularly in the nervous system and testes. This expression pattern is frequently associated with neuropathies, diseases, and cancer.

PANO1 is an apoptosis-inducing protein that regulates the tumor suppressor function of CDKN2A/p14ARF. It enhances the stability of CDKN2A/p14ARF protein by preventing its degradation. PANO1 may also have tumor suppressor properties.
