UBA7


Description

The UBA7 (ubiquitin like modifier activating enzyme 7) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

UBA7 is an E1-activating enzyme that catalyzes the covalent conjugation of the ubiquitin-like protein ISG15 to interferon-stimulated proteins (ISGs) and other cellular proteins, including p53, a process known as ISGylation. UBA7, in conjunction with ISG15, plays a vital role in antiviral immunity by inhibiting the replication of various viruses such as rabies, influenza, sindbis, rotavirus, and human cytomegalovirus. For example, ISG15 modification of the influenza A NS1 protein disrupts its interaction with importin-alpha, inhibiting its nuclear import. ISGylation of the human cytomegalovirus protein UL26 regulates its stability and inhibits its activities to suppress NF-kappa-B signaling.
