Description

The DOC2A (double C2 domain alpha) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

DOC2A, encoded by the DOC2A gene in humans, is a protein with two C2-like domains. It is primarily expressed in the brain and is believed to be involved in calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release. It is important to note that DOC2A is distinct from the unrelated DAB2 gene, which was initially named DOC-2.

DOC2A acts as a calcium sensor, potentially regulating the fusion of vesicles with membranes. It binds calcium and phospholipids. It may participate in calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release through its interaction with UNC13A, and it could also be involved in spontaneous neurotransmitter release independent of action potentials in neurons. Additionally, DOC2A regulates calcium-dependent secretory lysosome exocytosis in mast cells.

DOC2A is also known as Doc2.
