EI24


Description

The EI24 (EI24 autophagy associated transmembrane protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

The EI24 gene encodes a protein called Etoposide-induced protein 2.4 homolog. This protein is expressed at higher levels in cells that express the p53 gene compared to control cells. EI24 is an early target of p53-mediated apoptosis. It contains six potential transmembrane domains and may inhibit cell growth by triggering programmed cell death via the caspase 9 and mitochondrial pathways. The EI24 gene is located on chromosome 11q24, a region frequently altered in cancers. Alternative splicing of the gene results in two different protein isoforms.

EI24 acts as a negative growth regulator by inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis) through the p53 pathway. It also plays a role in the formation of autolysosomes, specialized cellular compartments that break down waste materials during autophagy.

EI24 is also known as EPG4, PIG8, TP53I8.
