FUCA1 : alpha-L-fucosidase 1
Description
The FUCA1 gene provides instructions for making the enzyme alpha-L-fucosidase. This enzyme plays a crucial role in breaking down a sugar molecule called fucose. Fucose is found in many complex sugars, including those that make up cell membranes and other important structures. When FUCA1 is mutated, alpha-L-fucosidase activity is reduced or absent, leading to the accumulation of fucose-containing molecules within lysosomes. Lysosomes are cellular compartments responsible for breaking down and recycling cellular waste products.
