HAO2


Description

The HAO2 (hydroxyacid oxidase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

HAO2 is an oxidase that catalyzes the oxidation of medium and long chain hydroxyacids, such as 2-hydroxyhexadecanoate and 2-hydroxyoctanoate, to their corresponding 2-oxoacids. It is believed to play a role in the oxidation of 2-hydroxy fatty acids, potentially contributing to the general pathway of fatty acid alpha-oxidation. HAO2 is active in vitro with the artificial electron acceptor 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol (DCIP), but O2 is thought to be the physiological electron acceptor, leading to the production of H2O2. However, HAO2 does not exhibit activity on glycolate, glyoxylate, L-lactate, or 2-hydroxybutanoate.

HAO2 is also known as GIG16, HAOX2.
