HIST1H2BL

Histone H2B: A Key Player in Chromatin Structure and Regulation

Description:

Histone H2B is a major component of nucleosomes, the basic repeating units of chromatin. It consists of approximately 120 amino acids and is highly conserved across eukaryotic species. Histone H2B plays a crucial role in determining the structure and function of chromatin by interacting with other histones and DNA.

Associated Diseases:

Mutations in the H2B gene have been linked to a number of diseases and disorders, including:

  • Microcephalic primordial dwarfism: A rare genetic condition characterized by severe growth retardation, intellectual disability, and microcephaly (small head size).
  • Intellectual disability: H2B mutations have been identified in individuals with mild to severe intellectual disability.
  • Autism spectrum disorder: Studies have suggested an association between H2B mutations and autism spectrum disorder.
  • Cancer: H2B alterations have been linked to the development of various types of cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer.

Did you Know ?

Approximately 1% of individuals with microcephalic primordial dwarfism have mutations in the H2B gene.
