RENBP

Description

The RENBP (renin binding protein) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.

The RENBP gene encodes N-acylglucosamine 2-epimerase, an enzyme that inhibits renin activity by forming a dimer with renin. The encoded protein contains a leucine zipper domain, essential for dimerization with renin. It can catalyze the interconversion of N-acetylglucosamine to N-acetylmannosamine, indicating it's a GlcNAc 2-epimerase. Transcript variants using alternative promoters are known.

Catalyzes the interconversion of N-acetylglucosamine to N-acetylmannosamine (PubMed:9990133, PubMed:10502668, PubMed:12499362). Plays a role in the breakdown of N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), a sugar found in food. Humans cannot produce Neu5Gc due to a deactivated enzyme, but they need to break it down after consuming it (PubMed:9990133). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10502668, ECO:0000269|PubMed:12499362, ECO:0000269|PubMed:9990133}

RENBP is also known as RBP, RNBP.
