Description

The RPLP2 (ribosomal protein lateral stalk subunit P2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

60S acidic ribosomal protein P2 is a protein encoded by the RPLP2 gene in humans. Ribosomes, essential for protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. This gene produces a ribosomal phosphoprotein, part of the 60S subunit. It's functionally similar to Escherichia coli's L7/L12 ribosomal protein, belonging to the L12P family. This protein is crucial for the elongation step of protein synthesis. Unlike most basic ribosomal proteins, this one is acidic. Its C-terminal end closely resembles those of ribosomal phosphoproteins P0 and P1. P2 can interact with P0 and P1 to form a pentameric complex, composed of P1 and P2 dimers, and a P0 monomer. The protein is found in the cytoplasm.
