SCAF8

Description

The SCAF8 (SR-related CTD associated factor 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

SCAF8 plays a crucial role in preventing premature termination of mRNA transcription. It acts as an anti-terminator protein, preventing the use of early polyadenylation sites. In conjunction with SCAF4, it suppresses the formation of non-functional truncated proteins by ensuring proper transcript elongation. SCAF8 achieves this by associating with the phosphorylated C-terminal domain (CTD) of RNA polymerase II, and subsequently binding to nascent RNA upstream of early polyadenylation sites, hindering premature cleavage and polyadenylation. Notably, SCAF8 can also independently function as a positive regulator of transcript elongation.

SCAF8 is also known as RBM16.
