SEC14L2

Description

The SEC14L2 (SEC14 like lipid binding 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

The SEC14L2 gene encodes a cytosolic protein that belongs to a family of lipid-binding proteins, including Sec14p, alpha-tocopherol transfer protein, and cellular retinol-binding protein. This protein stimulates squalene monooxygenase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol metabolism.

SEC14L2 is a carrier protein that binds to hydrophobic molecules, facilitating their transfer between cellular locations. It exhibits high affinity for alpha-tocopherol and weaker affinity for other tocopherols and tocotrienols. This interaction with alpha-tocopherol may contribute to transcriptional activation. SEC14L2's ability to bind squalene suggests a role in regulating cholesterol biosynthesis by promoting the transfer of squalene to active metabolic pools within the cell.

SEC14L2 is also known as C22orf6, SPF, TAP, TAP1.
