Description
The SKI (SKI proto-oncogene) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
The SKI gene provides instructions for making a protein involved in the TGF-β signaling pathway, which transmits chemical signals from the cell surface to the nucleus. This pathway regulates cell growth and division, cell maturation, cell movement, and cell self-destruction. SKI protein controls the TGF-β pathway by binding to SMAD proteins, preventing the SMAD complex from activating genes in the nucleus. It is found in many cell types and plays a role in the development of tissues such as the skull, bones, skin, and brain.
