SLC5A4

Description

The SLC5A4 (solute carrier family 5 member 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

The low affinity sodium-glucose cotransporter, also known as the sodium/glucose cotransporter 3 (SGLT3) or solute carrier family 5 member 4 (SLC5A4), is a protein encoded by the SLC5A4 gene in humans. It functions as a sugar sensor.

SLC5A4 does not function as a sodium/D-glucose symporter, but it may act as a D-glucose sensor. It generates a D-glucose-induced depolarization that is pH-independent, Na(+)-dependent at neutral pH, and likely H(+)-dependent at acidic pH. This conclusion is based on multiple studies (PubMed:13130073, PubMed:17110502, PubMed:20421923, PubMed:22766068).

SLC5A4 is also known as DJ90G24.4, SAAT1, SGLT3.
