Description

The SULT1A2 gene, located on chromosome 10q26.3, encodes a sulfotransferase enzyme known as estrogen sulfotransferase (EST). EST plays a crucial role in the metabolism of steroid hormones, primarily estrogen. It catalyzes the transfer of a sulfate group from 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS) to the hydroxyl group of estrogens.

Mutations in the SULT1A2 gene have been linked to several diseases and conditions:

  • Estrogen Dominance: Elevated levels of estrogen due to reduced EST activity can lead to estrogen dominance, which has been associated with breast cancer, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Reduced EST activity has been observed in women with PCOS, contributing to hormonal imbalances and reproductive difficulties.
