Description

The THAP1 (THAP domain containing 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

The THAP1 gene provides instructions for making a protein that acts as a transcription factor. This protein attaches to specific regions of DNA and regulates the activity of other genes. It is believed to play a role in various bodily processes, including the growth and division of endothelial cells (which line blood vessels) and the self-destruction of cells that are no longer needed (apoptosis).

THAP1 is a DNA-binding transcription regulator involved in endothelial cell proliferation and G1/S cell-cycle progression. It binds specifically to the 5'-[AT]NTNN[GT]GGCA[AGT]-3' DNA sequence and modulates the expression of pRB-E2F cell-cycle target genes, including RRM1. THAP1 is a component of a THAP1/THAP3-HCFC1-OGT complex, which is essential for regulating the transcriptional activity of RRM1. Additionally, THAP1 may exhibit pro-apoptotic activity by potentiating both serum-withdrawal and TNF-induced apoptosis.

THAP1 is also known as DYT6.
