TMEM87A

Description

The TMEM87A (transmembrane protein 87A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

TMEM87A, also known as Elkin1, may participate in retrograde transport from endosomes to the trans-Golgi network (TGN). It has been implicated in a novel mechanoelectrical transduction pathway involved in cell adhesion and migration. The exact mechanism is unclear, with some evidence suggesting it acts as a mechanically activated ion channel, while other studies propose it functions as an accessory protein that modulates an unidentified mechanically activated ion channel. Additionally, a lack of observed channel activity in certain studies has led to the suggestion that TMEM87A could function as a trafficking chaperone for membrane-associated cargo.

TMEM87A is also known as ELKIN1.
