Description

The XPNPEP2 (X-prolyl aminopeptidase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.

The XPNPEP2 gene in humans encodes Xaa-Pro aminopeptidase 2, an enzyme that breaks down specific bonds in proteins. This enzyme is part of the 'pita bread fold' family and comes in both soluble and membrane-bound forms in the body. Two separate genes create the membrane-bound and soluble forms of this enzyme.

XPNPEP2 is a membrane-bound metalloprotease that removes the penultimate proline residue from the N-termini of peptides, like Arg-Pro-Pro. This activity could be involved in regulating the breakdown of bradykinin, a vasodilator.

XPNPEP2 is also known as AEACEI, APP2.
