YTHDC2

Description

The YTHDC2 (YTH N6-methyladenosine RNA binding protein C2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

YTH domain containing 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the YTHDC2 gene.

YTHDC2 is a 3'-5' RNA helicase that plays a crucial role in the male and female germline, facilitating the transition from mitotic to meiotic divisions in stem cells. It specifically recognizes and binds to N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-containing RNAs, which are found in mRNAs and some non-coding RNAs, impacting RNA processing efficiency and stability. YTHDC2 is vital for a successful meiotic program in the germline by regulating the levels of m6A-containing RNAs. It binds and promotes the degradation of m6A-containing mRNAs, a process that requires its 3'-5' RNA helicase activity and may be mediated by XRN1 exoribonuclease. This protein is essential for both spermatogenesis and oogenesis.

YTHDC2 is also known as CAHL, hYTHDC2.
